Nigerian billionaires, Femi Otedola and Aliko Dangote were just a few of the bigwigs who joined a host of comedians and musicians, including 2face, Tiwa Savage, Yaw, Bovi and others, at this month's Alibaba’s concert, recently held at Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos. (continues below... )
The event was one of a kind, as it explored the rich talents in this part of the world. The over 5,000 guests at the event were treated with a rich mix of entertainment, music and comedy from seasoned comedy and musical acts. Notable dignitaries at the event include media moguls Dele Momodu of Ovation Magazine International, Mo Abudu of EL TV, music stars including Yemi Alade, Bez, Waje, Adewale Ayuba, Shola Allyson, Dammy Krane.
There were brilliant performances by comedians; Okey Bakassi, Helen Paul, Chigul, Seyi Law, Basorge Tariah, Mandy, Omobaba, and DJ Cuppy (daughter of Nigeria's oil magnate, Femi Otedola).
The highpoints of the event was the recognition of eminent personalities who have distinguished themselves either as pioneers or trailblazers in their various fields. Some of the awardees include Mike Adenuga for setting up Nigeria’s first indigenous telecoms operator, and the first Nigerian athlete to win the Olympic gold medal, Chioma Ajunwa-Okpara. Others include the Zinox boss, Leo Stan Ekeh, for pioneering Nigeria’s internationally acclaimed computer brand Zinox, Yewande Cole, first female flight engineer in Nigeria, and Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, first female Supreme Court judge.
The concert also recognized and celebrated the activities of a First Class graduate Electrical Engineering from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University; he was given 1 million naira, and also an offer of employment from Heritage Bank. According to veteran comedian Alibaba, convener of the event: "The event, besides being a special humorous review of significant happenings of 2014 by 12 top-of-their-game comedians, will be an annual event that will provide varied and interesting entertainment for the family".
He also maintained that each year, deserving individuals will be honored. Bunmi Davies from Stand Up Nigeria fame is the producer of the concert. It was indeed a celebration of excellence.
Born 1965 as Atunyota Alleluya Akporobomerere in Delta State Nigeria, Ali Baba, often refered to as the God father of Nigerian Comedy, began his professional career decades ago with corporate events, and through guts and sacrifice against the odds, rose to become Nigeria's prime comedian for corporate and state events. He has played major roles over the decades, to raise the Nigerian stand-up comedy industry, from non-existence to the proud, high networth industry that it is, today.
